these behind the scenes shot show the creation of the live action Kraken for shooting of the  underwater scenes from  CLASH OF THE TITANS. Most of the creature work in the film was, of course, stop motion animation and miniature work but this was obviously a way to save time and expense.

Jack Pierce Make up effects archive at visual effects archive page

Few people outside of the make up effects industry know the name Jack Pierce but there can be no doubt that the characters he helped create are recognized by millions. For years, Pierce served as Universal studios on board make up effects designer and innovator. He helped create the visual look for  such classic characters as Frankenstein, The Mummy, The Bride of Frankenstein and the Wolf man to name just a few. It would be an understatement to say these were simply iconic characters. They were more than that. Pierce's art made them live and breath. A visual effects artist? You bet! Many people have debated my inclusion of make up effects in the visual effects category but it clearly fits the definition. All good effects merge the art with the artist(the actors) and Pierce's work is a timeless, classic example of that ideology.

Tribute to Ray Harryhausen

This is an animated GIF from a recent british TV documentary on the famous animator. I think it gives you an amazing insight into his incredible talent and obvious patience with the form

Rankin Bass stop motion archive added to VFX archive page

Fans of the old Christmas specials from the 60's and 70's will enjoy this addition to the VFX archive page.

It's a collection of photos and behind the scenes footage from the Rankin Bass animation specials. The stop motion motion puppetry was excellent considering the limited resources the production had. Most of the animation for these films were produced in Japan but commissioned by the US based Rankin Bass company which also collaborated with Japanese producers to make "King Kong Escapes".

Most people know him from his work on Star Wars films but many do not know that he designed the saucer family from *batteries not included, the spaceships from Cocoon, the starfighter from Buck Rogers or the ships from Battlestar Galactica. The early films of George Lucas

Take a look at this blog from Kitbashed. It contains a collection of early student and experimental films by George Lucas and you can tell by looking at them what his earliest influence were. His facination with speed, editing, and graphics are very evident here. there's some amazing stuff here and many of his design influence carried over to his feature films
